Personal Styling Misconceptions
In this video, I wanted to do something a little different and instead of sharing some fashion tips, I wanted to share something that has been popping up a lot lately for me and that’s some common misconceptions women when it comes to working with a personal stylist.
Before we dive in, I’m Emmaline Chappell and I’m a certified personal stylist. I have my own business here in Richmond. I help busy women elevate their style by rediscovering the joy of dressing to look luxe for less.
In the last couple of years of having my personal styling business, I’ve come to realize that many women are worried that I’m this super bougie stylist whose going to come in and make you get rid of everything in your closet and dictate you on how to dress and make you spend thousands of dollars on a new wardrobe. No, no no no! That is so far from who I am.
As a a stylist, I work with you where you are and my approach is about mixing high end with low end. So I don’t believe you have to overhaul your entire wardrobe and I’m not this boougie stylist who thinks you need to be in a head-to-toe $3000 outfit. I like showing you how to work with what you already have in a fresh way while also investing in several new pieces to elevate your style. I don’t believe you need to have thousands and thousands of dollars to have great style. It’s all in how you wear the outfit that makes great style.
And 99 percent of the time, it’s never a wardrobe makeover scenario for my clients. So many women think their wardrobe is hopeless but after our sessions, they realize they had so much to work with and only needed a couple new pieces. No makeover necessary.
And a big concern that always pops up is “I probably have to have a 1000 clothing budget when we go shopping” but I’ve worked with clients with all budget ranges. I’ve gotten some amazing pieces for women just from thrifting. And we’ve gotten great pieces at higher end stores. My favorite is a mixture of both. Investing in those pieces that are the work horses of your wardrobe and finding affordable pieces as well.
Now when it comes to that aspect of someone coming in and telling you how to dress, I totally understand how the idea of having this professional come into your space, into your closet and see your clothes can feel really intimating. Even in movies, people in the fashion industry can be depicted as this authoritative judgmental figure. But I’m never here to critique, I’m here to listen, give you guidance and open your eyes to a new outlook on dressing. A good stylist is not here to judge because we are not in any place to judge. Trust me, even a personal stylist has had many days where we hate our closet, we feel uncomfortable in our clothes and feel like just giving up when it comes to our style. That’s a big part of why I love personal styling because I like helping women and getting them to their goals they have in mind for their style. Throughout the sessions of working with a client, there’s a lot of talking and getting to really know about them, their life, their preferences with their clothes, their insecurities and their goals. In a lot of ways, personal styling is so much more than fashion. It can deep. So that’s why judging is never the right energy any personal stylist should have. Judging you or dictating you on how to dress is not how I want to work with someone because that’s just crummy.
Personal styling for me is all about showing you how to have more fun with fashion and showing you how to use your style as a way to reflect your individuality. No matter your size or your budget, I truly believe that every woman should feel fabulous in her clothes. At the end of the day, we all want to be seen and feel confident especially as women. Our clothes are an extension of who we are and so it’s important that we feel good in our style.
So I just wanted to share some of these misconceptions on working a personal stylist because they pop up a lot and I hope this quick video clears some of that up.
