A Week in the Life of a Personal Stylist
So today, I wanted to give you guys a peak into what a typical week of a personal stylist looks like. I feel like when I tell people what I do, it can seem like a mystery so in this video and during this week on social media, I’ll be sharing what my days look like.
Before we dive in, I’m Emmaline Chappell and I’m a certified personal stylist. I have my own business here in Richmond. I help busy women elevate their style by rediscovering the joy of dressing to look luxe for less.
So I like to think of Mondays as my marketing days. It’s where I record my video for the week, like this one I’m doing today. I respond to all my emails and set up client appointments. I plan out my content for the week and start planning for the content for next week too. If I have projects like creating a style presentation for a speaking engagement I’m doing or making a PDF on what to wear for branding photos to send to photographers I’m collaborating with, I’ll use the beginning of the week to work on that. I really love Mondays because if I’m able to make a ton of progress, it makes the rest of the week super smooth and I can focus on client work and personal styling.
Now a lot of times Tuesdays are my days to immerse in fashion. Because I’ve focused so much on the business side of personal styling on Monday, I gotta give that side of my brain a rest and I use Tuesday to as my day to build my expertise as a stylist. Sometimes I’ll use the whole day to research different fashion topics like capsule wardrobes or I’ll browse different online articles about the upcoming trends or fashion history. Lately, I’ve been picking a book about a particular style subject every two weeks to read. This past couple of weeks I’ve been reading this one. It’s written by a costume designer who gives different tips on how to make getting dressed a breeze for stylists or every day women.
Wednesdays and Thursdays are typically my days I work with clients aside from the weekend. This differs every week. Sometimes I’m out shopping with a client or I’m shopping online for them. They could be coming to my studio in my house to have their colors done or get measured to identify their body type. Or I’m in their home editing their closet or planning outfits for them.
Friday is my time to recharge. By the end of the week, I’m usually mentally and creatively exhausted from meeting with clients and marketing on social media. My brain is normally just dead. But I’ve learned that Fridays are super crucial for me because I tend to burn out easily. That’s the one negative drawback of being my own boss because for me I focus so much on the business aspect of what I do that it drains my energy, that core joy fashion brings me starts to fade away if I’m not careful. So prioritizing time for me to sit down, be quiet and do things that remind of why I love fashion is super important. Sometimes I’ll go window shopping in Carytown, go for a walk in the park and just people watch for awhile or I’ll binge watch my favorite fashion movies. And some Fridays, I’ll blast music in the house and play dress up in my closet and see what new outfits I can create.
No week is ever completely the same which is fun but for my personality I need to have some structure so having designated days of the week set for different parts of my business if very helpful. When I tell people I’m personal stylist, it sounds super glamorous and in some ways it is but a lot of what I do is keeping up with what’s going on the fashion world, building my expertise and continuing my education as a stylist, marketing to get clients and working with clients. It’s definitely been a work in progress to figure out how to create my work weeks as a stylist but it’s a been a fun journey.
So stay tuned because I’ll be sharing lots of sneak peeks into my days this week.
