Master the Art of Accessorizing
So today I wanted to talk about accessories! It can feel overwhelming with all the different options you have: jewelry, handbags, scarves, sunglasses hats and belts, even nail polish counts as an accessory. So I totally get not knowing where to start. Accessories are one of the best ways to elevate an outfit, transition your look from day to night and it’s a great way to express your personality through your accessory choices. Because accessories are a pretty in depth category, I’m gonna split it into two videos. in this video, I’m gonna cover a few tips on jewelry and bags. And stay tuned, I’m gonna do another video on hats, belts and scarves.
So for jewelry, first things first, try not to have your pieces in a tangled mess or shoved away in your closet. If you can’t see your pieces or they’re a jumbled mess, you’re not gonna want to wear them. Try to have a nice jewelry box, a clear space to store or hang them so they’re accessible to you and organized.
Tip two is think about proportion and scale. When it comes to accessories, this goes for not just jewelry and handbags but also belts, we want to keep in mind the scale. If you’re more petite, don’t go for a really oversized bag that swallows your frame or don’t choose a belt that looks to small on your curvy frame. We always want the visual we’re creating in our outfit to look harmonized.
Tip three has to do with necklace layering. A good rule of them is to let the shortest necklaces be the lightest and daintiest and the heavier necklaces with chunky chains be the longest. And it doesn’t always have to be short to long, I like to layer necklaces that are similar in length but I keep them similar in weight so it doesn’t look like a tangled mess.
Tip four is think about color when accessorizing. You can use jewelry colors that coordinate or match a color in your outfit or use the jewelry as a pop of color to elevate a more casual look.
The last tip is about bags. I love a good handbag, whether it’s a designer or from target. There’s so many shapes, styles and sizes, it really pulls a look together. Bags do not have to match your shoes. This is such a lame rule. There’s nothing wrong with matching or not matching. The handbag could be in a color that gives a fun contrast with the color of the shoes, or it could be a similar color or you could coordinate the material of the bag with the shoe, like leather and leather, suede and suede etc.
Accessories are a pretty powerful style tool to utilize in your looks so don’t leave them as an afterthought in your daily outfits. I hope these tips were helpful and give a confidence boost to play more with accessories in your outfits. Remember these are just tips and suggestions, these aren’t rules. My motto I always tell my clients is that these are just guidelines and tools to add to your fashion tool box, these aren’t fashion rules and laws. If you see an oversized handbag even though you’re petite and you love it, go for it, it’s just about knowing how to put more thought, intention and awareness when shopping and putting together an outfit
