Low-Key Luxe
Happy Monday! In this video, I wanted to share my current style inspiration that I’m having: I’m calling it low-key luxe. I spoke about this trend briefly in my video for the spring/summer 2021 trends. It’s the combination of comfort with an element of flair in your outfit.
I’m super inspired by this way of dressing right now and this is a completely new avenue for me because my style used to not be so focused on comfort.
Before we dive in, I’ll give you a quick introduction, I’m Emmaline Chappell and I’m a certified personal stylist. I have my own business here in Richmond, va called emmaline’s personal styling. I help busy women elevate their style by discovering a new way of dressing to look luxe for less.
Let me start by saying that I never thought I would see the day where I would be buying sweatshirts and sneakers for my wardrobe. Before covid, I never felt like I could pull off the super popular athleisure look. I’ve never really been one to dress down and I just didn’t think I looked good in a sweatsuit or sneakers.
Throughout 2020, I wasn’t wearing sweats working from home. I found that getting dressed up even though I was stuck in the house brought me a lot of joy. But I noticed that I started to pay attention more to comfort because I was having to sit on video calls for hours. So even though my outfits were snazzy and dressed up, they were still comfortable and easy to wear.
This started to open my eyes more to incorporating more pieces purely comfort that I used to always shy away like sweatshirts, track pants and sneakers.
And now in 2021, I’m finding that I’m super inspired by the upcoming trends and fashion predictions of post covid dressing where it’s this idea of looking luxe but feeling low-key and comfortable.
Just the other day, I did a little shopping spree and bought two pair of sneakers and three sweatshirts. If you had told me a couple years ago that I would be warming up to the idea of adding athleisurewear into my wardrobe, I wouldn’t have believed you.
When I shopped, I did what I tell women and all of my clients to do when it comes to trends they’re gravitating towards and when their personal style is evolving: take the inspiration, make it current and refine it to fit your style preferences. So I bought sweatshirts that are light for the spring weather (so it’s current with this season), they’re colorful which suits my personal style because I love color and they’re a great cut for my body type.
I love the idea of pairing sneakers with a dress, pleated skirt or blazer or pairing a colorful sweatshirt with a sequin skirt or wide leg printed pants with pointed toe flats.
I’m super excited to get dressed with these pieces because I look at this new trend as my way of dressing down. It’s comfortable but it still has some pizzazz by the way I style the pieces.
