How to Maximize Your Wardrobe

In this video, I wanted to talk about how to maximize your wardrobe! So I know for many women, including myself, we can feel like we have a closet with so many pieces and think we have nothing to wear. We end up getting stuck in the same outfit rotation which can make getting dressed feel really uninspiring. But I’m going to give you some tips that help me to make the most out of my wardrobe and you’ll feel like you have lots of fresh outfits that you didn’t even know existed in your closet.

Before we dive in, I’m Emmaline Chappell and I’m a certified personal stylist. I have my own business here in Richmond. I help busy women elevate their style by rediscovering the joy of dressing to look luxe for less.
So the first tip is one of the simplest methods you can do to maximize your closet and that is to use accessories. If you find yourself wearing the same dress with the same shoes or wearing the same top with the same pants you always pair with it, utilize your accessories to switch things up. Try a different purse, a colorful shoe or play with your jewelry. I’ve done this with my basic white tshirt and jeans outfits, by adding heels one day with a bright clutch and then sneakers the next day with a mini backpack and a statement necklace, it instantly made me feel like I had a completely different outfit.
Tip two is to repurpose your out of season and special occasion pieces. I see a lot of this with my clients. They have so many great pieces that are only for special occasions and they feel they’re too fancy for their everyday wear. But using a blazer that you wear for fall can absolutely work for those summer breezy nights or that sequin skirt you only wear for parties is perfect for a day you want to level up your style.
Tip three is to create weekly outfit challenges. Maybe one week you encourage yourself to wear an outfit with a pop of color each day or the next week you push yourself to create three new outfits using a piece you haven’t worn in months. These challenges are a great way to get the most wear out of your wardrobe because it’ll push you to search through pieces in your closet you’ve been passing by.
Tip four is to take inventory. For two weeks, try writing down each outfit you wore for those two weeks. This strategy will help you to see what pieces you wear in your closet and what shapes, styles and fabrics you’re drawn to. So that when you do shop you’ll get pieces that you know you’ll wear to continue to maximize your closet and it’ll prevent you from purchasing pieces that’ll just be hanging in your closet.
The last tip is to try a style tweak. So this is a service I offer that has been really helpful for my clients when they feel like they’re not getting the most out of their wardrobe. I’ll come in and we’ll basically shop your closet. We’ll go through your pieces to see which ones suit you, your figure and your lifestyle and which ones can go. And we’ll look at the pieces you love and the pieces you may have forgotten you had to create lots of new outfits. This session is a great way to give your closet a mini purge, provide you with some fresh outfits by showing you how to maximize what you already have.
