Capsule Wardrobes

In this video, I wanted to talk about capsule wardrobes and how to decide if it’s right for you. This has been a super popular concept for several years now. I have to admit that when I first heard of this way of dressing, I didn’t really like it. It initially sounded boring. For me, I need variety and I like having lots pieces to choose from. I looked at it from a very minimalist approach and there’s nothing wrong with minimalism, it just wasn’t for me. But once I did more research, I can definitely see the benefits and it’s actually more personalized than I realized. I’ll be doing another video giving some tips on how to start creating your capsule wardrobe but in this video, I just want to give you the basics to help you decide if this way of dressing is right for you.

Before we dive in, I’m Emmaline Chappell and I’m a certified personal stylist. I have my own business here in Richmond. I help busy women elevate their style by rediscovering the joy of dressing to look luxe for less.

So let’s go over the run down of a capsule wardrobe.

To put it simply, it’s a small collection of clothes carefully chosen to work together. It’s essentially the ultimate mix and match wardrobe. It’s all about having items that you love and they can all work well together seamlessly.

There’s different types of capsules and you can decide which method would best suit you. The most popular version is the project 333 capsule which is where you have 33 items that you can interchange and wear for 3 months. The items include clothes, shoes and accessories. Another capsule method is using the number of items and equating it to the number of days you plan on wearing it. So for example, you could have a capsule of 10 items to create outfits for 10 days.

Some of the top benefits include: Having a wardrobe with items that you know work well together saves you time and energy of figuring out what to wear. It saves you money by shopping with a purpose to only purchase pieces that go well with your existing collection. It gives you confidence of knowing that you’ll look stylish in whatever outfit combo you come up with from your capsule. And it’s good for the planet. Buying less and wearing it longer decreases the demand of clothing production which can have a positive impact on the environment and you don’t have to feel like you’ve been wasteful having a closet of pieces you never wore.

As a stylist, I look at the goal of what capsule wardrobes are aiming for as a great goal for most women. It doesn’t technically have to be a minimal, super small wardrobe. But it’s the principle of creating a wardrobe that is only filled with pieces you love and that can be worn together in many ways. That’s definitely what I strive to help women have with their wardrobes. And if you decide to go the route of having a capsule wardrobe, remember it can be as personalized as you want. It can be 10 items or 44. You can stick to a certain color scheme or add in pops of statement pieces. Fashion should be fun and fit you and your lifestyle. You can use that same motto with capsule wardrobes. You can create it to be right for you, your style, your lifestyle and the way you want to get dressed.
