How to Layer Like a Style Pro
So today, I wanted to about layering. Once the colder seasons get here, it opens up a wide range of outfit possibilities being able to layer multiple pieces to create different looks throughout fall and winter. Layering is great because it gives you the option to be functional yet fashionable. You can bundle up and be warm but still look stylish. But I know even for me, layering can feel a little intimidating because you don’t want to look too bulky. Thankfully I’ve got some easy tips to help you master the art of layering.
Before we dive in, I’m Emmaline Chappell and I’m a certified personal stylist. I have my own business here in Richmond. I help busy women elevate their style by rediscovering the joy of dressing to look and feel luxe.
When we talk about layering, there’s some essentials that you can count on to create great layered looks. I’m talking blazers, outerwear, button downs, turtlenecks, sweaters and vests. All of these components are perfect to play with when you’re laying in your outfits.
The first tip is to use your basic inner wear as the backbone of your layered outfit. So striped or solid t-shirts, ribbed, fitted sweaters, button downs or turtlenecks. All of these pieces are great because you can style them over or under or over as many elements in your outfit as you want. Use them as your basic to build your layered pieces around it.
The next tip is to utilize your out of season pieces. So don’t just pack away your summer wear yet, this limits your outfit possibilities. You can still wear one of your summer maxi dresses by layering a turtleneck or button down underneath, add a blazer and some boots and you’ve got a perfect, fall layered look. This same tip applies to utilizing your special occasion pieces as well. That faux fur jacket that only wear for parties could be layered over a sheer button down, a graphic tee underneath tucked in a pair of skinny jeans and some sleek sneakers.
Tip three is to mix textures. Fall is the perfect time to mix textures in your outfits and it’s even better when you’re layering textured pieces in your outfit. So try mixing your leather pieces with knitwear or furry pieces with sequins or suede with lace. Playing with textures just adds more interest to your layered looks.
Tip four is to play with color. So you have a couple options here. You could do a layered look that’s monochromatic where each piece is in a similar tone. This is great because the head-to-toe tonal visual keeps your layered outfit from looking too bulky. Or you could do a layered outfit wear there’s a consistent pop of the same color throughout the outfit. This creates a layered look that is cohesive.
Tip five is don’t forget about accessories. Layering isn’t only exclusive to your clothes. Add a hat, a belt, a scarf or layer your necklaces over your turtleneck that’s underneath your button down. Have fun with layering your accessories in your looks
Last tip is to not be afraid to experiment. Don’t overthink the process. Let yourself think outside of the box when you’re layering. It’ll lead to some amazing outfits. sometimes it works and sometimes it won’t but that’s the beauty and fun of fashion. It’s never too serious, just play around and see what cool outfits you can create by layering your pieces.
Stay tuned this week because I’ll be showing you some easy layering outfit formulas where I put these tips into practice.
