Fall Fashion Trends 2021
So today, I wanted to about this seasons fall trends! I’m so excited because non of these trends included sweatpants! Don’t worry, comfort is still key in these trends but it’s pushing out of being too comfortable and reminding us to look a little more polished. Many of the designers showcased their 2021 collections with virtual fashion shows. It was during the pandemic and it was not the normal fashion weeks were used to. But this fall, things are a little more back to normal, the fashion shows are back in person, our social lives have opened back up and so I wanted to cover some of the top trends the fashion forecasters are saying we’ll be wearing this fall. The recurring theme within most of the 2021 collections was optimism. Many of these trends encourage us to get dressed, go out and inspire us to have more joy with our style and I’m so freaking excited for that! And I found that most of us already have several pieces that fit within these trends so you don’t have to feel like you need to go out and a buy a whole new trendy fall wardrobe.
Before we dive in, I’m Emmaline Chappell and I’m a certified personal stylist. I have my own business here in Richmond. I help busy women elevate their style by rediscovering the joy of dressing to look and feel luxe.
The first trend is saturated colors. I feel like whenever we think about fall, we associate those darker, more neutral colors like grays, browns, burnt orange and mustard. But many of the designers showcased brighter, bolder, electric and more vibrant color palettes. You could let your whole outfit be a colorful mixture of saturated shades like lilac and rust or marigold and pink or you could go more muted and have one powerful piece that pops a punch of rich color. And again, the running theme many of the designers had in their collections was optimism and joy and when you think of color, you think of joy.
The next trend was logos. The logo mania craze is continuing to show it’s here to stay from the last several seasons. But designers took a more subtle approach instead of doing the loudly adorned logos, slogans and graphics, this season, the logos are more camouflaged into the garment. So you could do a logo printed pair of trousers with a fuzzy sweater and kitten heels or sweatshirt with a witty remark or artistic graphic and pair it with some flared jeans and sneakers for a low effort look.
The third trend is tailoring. Specifically tonal and cropped tailoring. A lot of the looks on the runway were falling head first into tailoring. I’m talking button downs under vests, paired with palazzo style trousers, long suit coats and loafers. This trend is a literal take on classic, sharp tailoring. Designers also did a lot of tonal tailoring looks as well where you can pair suit separates in the same colors to create elevated layered looks. And we also saw cropped tailoring. So think menswear tailoring with a twist by wearing a cropped tailored and structured jacket. It’s the new way to wear a suit.
Fourth trend is supersize jackets. So think puffer jackets, long, oversized coats to fit your big winter sweaters underneath. The runways showcased cloudlike silhouettes as the outerwear trend for fall 2021. It’s the coat choice you want when you want to go more high fashion, extra and bold. You’ll be warm, comfy and making a grand statement because why not? I know for me, I get tired of the basic coat choices and having an extra long, puffer coat is perfect for those I wanna be a little extra. And I think all women need days like that.
And the fifth trend is elevated knitwear. Comfort and cozy was the optimal fashion word during the pandemic and the designers showed a lot of knitwear pieces that were cozy but also polished. So I’m talking matching sweater two piece sets, or knitwear skirts or dresses. it’s easy, comfortable pieces in body con and flattering silhouettes that can go from day to night.
So those are just a few of the fall fashion trends that I wanted to cover but I hope these inspire you to get dressed this season!
