Have More Fun with Fashion

So today, I wanted to talk to you about having more fun with fashion. There’s so many rules the industry puts on us and sometimes it’s even ourselves that put restrictions on what we think we can and can’t wear and this robs us of the simple joy that fashion can bring. Fashion is not supposed to be serious, it’s expressive, it’s personal and it’s a way to use clothes to have fun and feel more confident. As a stylist, this is something that I believe to my core and I’m always implementing it to my clients so I wanted to give you some tips on how to have more fun with fashion.

Tip one is to let your inner child come through. When we were little, we never took ourselves so serious. It was a time where playing dress up was fun and we wore whatever we wanted without a care. Let yourself have that same energy today. There’s a couple of pieces that spark that carefree inner child whenever I wear them. It’s a tulle skirt and a big faux fur jacket. They’re really playful and whenever I wear them, it channels that little girl who always had fun with fashion. Find a few pieces, could be shoes or accessories that feel playful, that spark that joy and remind you of your carefree childhood days.

Tip three is pick pieces with certain details. That could be color, textures or specific design details. Color boosts your mood, sequins add a touch of glamour to your day, ruffles or volume can feel dramatic and textures like suede or leather can make you feel rich and polished. I find that when you wear clothes with any of these details, it helps you to loosen up and feel more free with your fashion.

Tip four is stop waiting. Stop waiting to wear what you want once you’ve lost weight. Stop waiting for the right occasion to wear a specific piece. Don’t hold yourself back or put your life on hold. Your clothes should be worn now. You deserve to feel stylish and have fun with your clothes today. Dress your best today, dress up and dress for you today. When you hold yourself back, you’re limiting yourself the chance to have fun and experiment with fashion, to discover your personal style and feel good in your clothes.

The last tip is most important. It’s to allow confidence to come into your space. In order to do any of these tips I’ve talked about or to experiment and play with your clothes, you have to rewrite that inner negative dialogue with yourself. Whatever that voice tells you about your body hang ups, what you shouldn’t wear, what you can’t pull off, why you can’t pair this with that, it’s all baloney. You have to be your own cheerleader or your own fairy godmother that sprinkles nothing but confident boosting comments in your head. When you put on an outfit that makes you feel good or if you’re trying something new with your style or you’re trying one of these tips in this video, look in the mirror and say you look good girl! Give yourself a twirl and say it again. This works for me every time. You have to allow yourself to feel confident, to be seen, so that fashion can feel more fun and less serious.
