Styling Color

So today, I wanted to talk to you about how to style color successfully in your outfits. I talked a little bit last year on how to use a color wheel when getting dressed and it got a lot great feedback. And because color can feel really intimidating and confusing, I want to give you guys a lot more content on utilizing color in your outfits. So I thought why not start the new the year with a video on styling color. January is always a dreary month. The holidays are done, it’s grey outside and we tend to start having those drab, boring feelings about our closet. For this video, I want to give you several tips to making it easy to start playing with color in your outfits.

Tip one is use color in your accessories. So maybe you want to just get your feet wet with utilizing color in your outfits, this tip is great for beginners, it’s great for women who typically just wear neutral colors and it’s a great way to elevate a more casual look. Try a pop of color by way of jewelry, a scarf, a purse, tights, a belt, a hat or even a more colorful makeup. Having these pops of color here and there in your look will help you step out of your comfort zone but still feel balanced and not too over the top. I challenge you to try to push yourself to wear more than one colorful accessory. Maybe it’s a colorful printed shoe with a pastel beret or bright statement earrings and a belt in a similar shade of those pair of earrings.

Tip two is use a printed garment. This also another easy way to add color into your outfits. The print has done all the work for you since it already has the chosen colors in the pattern. The next step is to find a piece in your closet that matches one of the shades in that print. When styling a colorful printed piece, you can either let it be the statement element of your outfit and let it shine or you can tone it down. Maybe it’s a fluorescent floral printed dress, you could let it be loud and style, neutral shoes and accessories or you could style it with a denim jacket and some cute sneakers to tone down the boldness.

Now these next two tips are more intermediate and advance. So if you feel ready to just dive into wearing color, try these two tips. Tip three is try a tonal outfit. A tonal color combination is when you style an outfit choosing one single hue and pairing it with pieces in similar shades, tints and tones of that single hue. So you could choose a navy blue blouse and add a powder blue pair of trousers, royal blue boots and boom you’ve got a tonal outfit. These variations of one that one hue in your outfit can create a really clean and balanced look. This method also looks really pretty when it’s done with neutral colors. Like brown and then pairing pieces in varying shades of brown like camel, light browns and chocolate browns.

The last tip is going monochromatic. This is when you style an outfit using one color in the same shade from head-to-toe. This can create a visual column effect which can be really bold and elongating. You could do this with all black, all ivory or all royal purple, any color you’d like. Every piece of your outfit is in the same color. This definitely is a level of styling color where you’re ready to be vibrant and experimental. You could take your monochromatic look one step further by adding one accessory in a totally different color as a stand out piece to add even more oomph to your outfit.

I hope those tips were helpful for you. Stay tuned in these next couple of months because I’m gonna give more tips on styling color, using the color wheel and color blocking in your outfits.
