Style Ruts
So today, I wanted to talk about style ruts and how to tell if you’re experiencing one right now. So recently, I had a mini meltdown of just feeling bleh with my clothes. Every time I looked in my closet, I felt so bored, I didn’t know what I wanted to wear and I felt like my personal style was changing and my closet didn’t reflect that. And the biggest tell tale sign was every time I went out, I would immediately see someone who was dressed so stylish and I would instantly regret what I had on. So because of my recent realization of my style rut and the fact that a lot of times in January, I see a lot of women start struggling more with their style, I wanted to give you some tips to help you recognize if you’re in a rut with your style.
First things first, if you hear yourself saying: my closet is full but I have nothing to wear, I feel so frustrated with my clothes, I hate my closet, I want to change up my style but don’t know how, oh whatever I don’t know what to wear so I’ll just do my usual outfit, or oh my gosh I literally changed my outfit three times before I left the house and I still hate my outfit. If you find yourself saying any of these on a weekly basis, girl it’s safe to say you’re in a style rut.
Style ruts are tricky because they usually come out of no where. You’ve been going along content with your clothes, wearing your outfits each day then slowly it starts to creep in. All of a sudden you’re not happy with what you have, you feel stuck with your closet, you know somethings off but you don’t know where to start to solve it. Or it may not creep in, it may be as a sudden as you just got promoted and you realize holy crap my wardrobe is too casual for my new position or you’re in a new phase of your life, you want to elevate your style to reflect where you are but realize all of your clothes don’t reflect your reality.
Another sign of a style rut is having fashion fatigue. This is where you’re wearing the same pieces in rotation. What’s interesting with style ruts is that it creates this bad cycle. You’re in a place of change, where you need to reinvent your style, nothing in your closet excites you and each time you get dressed, you have this negative, uninspired energy which leads you to picking pieces that reflect your bad mood. So now you’re wearing an outfit that you don’t like which plays into your rut even more.
The third sign of a style rut is when you’re out, you see women who look polished and so effortless and you end up feeling the complete opposite in your outfit. I know for me, it wasn’t like they were in ball gowns in the grocery store but you could tell they put more intention in their outfit and it was pieces that made them feel confident and comfortable and they wore it so well. And I started having doubts in my sense of style.
Sign four is you just feel inauthentic in your clothes. For me this really stood out. Every time I got dressed, I’d look in the mirror and think this really just doesn’t feel like me, this isn’t working for me like it used to. And it’s amazing how much that can bring down your mood. Getting dressed is something we do everyday and when you start feeling like your clothes aren’t authentic to who you are, there’s this friction it starts to cause in your everyday life, you don’t feel like yourself and you start struggling more with your self esteem.
So those are some definite signs of a style rut. Stayed tuned because in the coming weeks, I’m gonna give you some tips on how to start getting out of this style rut you’re experiencing.
