FB LIVE: How to Put Together an Outfit
Happy Monday! During this LIVE want to briefly discuss how to put an outfit together. For some of my clients, they look in their closet and feel like “okay I see all these great pieces but I have no idea how to put them together to create a look” so I always like to show them the easy way I take individual pieces and put them all together to create a great outfit. But before we dive in, wanted to give you a quick introduction, I’m Emmaline Chappell and I’m a certified personal stylist. I have my own company called emmaline’s personal styling. I help busy women elevate their style by discovering a new way of dressing to look luxe for less.
Today, I want to briefly discuss how I put together my everyday outfits as a personal stylist . So there are three elements to every outfit: a balancing piece, an interest piece and a statement piece. A balancing piece is the piece that is quiet and pulls the whole look together. The interest piece is a piece that has a little flare to it, it complements the outfit but it’s not the stand out piece. And the statement piece is exactly how it sounds, it’s the statement, stand out piece that takes the most attention. When you’re planning your outfit, open your closet and pick a piece that is speaking to you, make sure it suits your schedule for the next day and then let that piece be what you build your outfit around. When you’re putting your outfit together, you can start with any of these three elements, it doesn’t have a particular order you need to go in.
So lets say I open my closet and want to use this red blazer as my statement. I can pair it with this floral printed dress which would be the interest because it complements the statement, has a little flare to it and then finish the look with this black block heel as your balancing piece because it pulls it all together.
Or lets say you choose this metallic shoe as your interest piece to build your outfit around. I can pair it with this black and white polka dot culotte pant as your statement piece, add this beaded necklace to play with the metallic of the shoes and finish it with this black short sleeve knit top as your balancing piece because it plays well with every piece and pulls it all together nicely.
Or lets say you choose this white button down as your balancing piece because it’s a classic cut, nothing is loud or has any interest. We’re going to build the outfit around this piece with this black and white tweed pencil skirt as our interest piece because the fabric gives it a slight flare and contrast and then finish it off with this sequin handbag and dazzling earrings as our statement. Using this method of incorporating the three elements is how I always put my outfits together and it always makes for a great, balanced look.
Remember, your outfit should have those three elements: balancing piece, an interest piece and a statement piece. You can build your outfit around whichever piece you want, you can build it around a statement piece like the red blazer or build the outfit around an interest piece like the metallic shoes or build the outfit around a balancing piece like the white button down.
