How I Fell in Love with Fashion

Happy Monday! During this LIVE I want to do things a little different and instead of giving my usual fashion tips, I want to share more about my journey to becoming a personal stylist. Last week I talked about when I was bit by the fashion bug. And this week I’m going to t my journey to becoming a personal stylist.

But before we dive in, I’ll just give you a quick introduction, I’m Emmaline Chappell and I’m a certified personal stylist. I have my own company called emmaline’s personal styling. I help busy women elevate their style by discovering a new way of dressing to look luxe for less.
Today, I want to briefly share how I fell in love with fashion . I remember as early as 2nd grade, I was putting my outfits together for the next morning for school. I would watch tv shows and movies just solely based on the clothes they would wear and then I would try to draw and recreate the looks on paper. And even in high school, sometimes I would go to the mall and go the formal section of macys and try on the dresses just to see how the different cuts and fabrics laid and felt on the body.
I remember when I was in elementary school, I use to always look forward to going school clothes shopping at the end of summer. My mom and I use to go to JCP because they had really good sales and we spend hours in the juniors section trying on clothes and I loved it. When I look back on each year of school, I can see that I had a different style I was going for and a different aesthetic I gravitated towards even at a such a young age. In third grade I wore a lot of pink camo coordinated sets. In 2nd grade I wore a lot of flowy skirts and boots and colorful crochet sweaters. And 4th and 5th grade I wore a lot of athletic looking dresses with sneakers, like skorts and cute tshirts with tennis shoes.
By middle school, I started to really branch out with my style. 6th grade I was miserable, clothes shopping wasn’t making me happy. You know that age is always hard, you’re starting to feel more self-conscious as a young girl and you’re comparing yourself to other girls. But by 7th and 8th grade, I found my confidence and got re-inspired with fashion again and I let my personal style go crazy. I wore neon colors, colorful sneakers, paint splattered skinny jeans, off the shoulder tops, flowers in my hair, I was just embracing my style and I loved it. It was during this phase and high school that I started to realize how clothes could positively effect your mood and confidence. If I was having a bad day, I would come home and put my outfit together for the next day at school and pick pieces to emulate how I wanted to feel the next morning. And it would work! My outfit would help me stand taller and feel prettier and boost my mood.
Fashion has been a constant in my life. I’ve always loved everything about it. I like the feel of clothes, being able to create different shapes and looks from putting different pieces together and I’ve always been fascinated by how our clothes effect our confidence and self image. So next week, I’m going to be talking about how my love for fashion and style took me on this journey of becoming a personal stylist.
