Women's New View on Fashion After 2020

So lately I’ve been wanting to talk about something that I’ve been noticing this past year when it comes to fashion, the pandemic and how it’s changed women’s view on getting dressed. I’ve been really inspired recently when I’m out and about, and I see way more women who look like they’re getting dressed with intention. I feel like there’s definitely been a shift that’s happened since the pandemic and it’s changed our views on fashion. We were in the house, couldn’t go out and it was easy to forget after awhile how to get dressed. Living in our comfort clothes became our daily uniforms. Then in this past year, our social lives started to blossom again and people wanted to be out. I know for me, I’ve taken every chance that I’ve gotten to get dressed and go out. So this is a trend I’ve been seeing more and more and I wanted to share my thoughts with you guys.

Before we dive in, I’m Emmaline Chappell and I’m a certified personal stylist. I have my own business here in Richmond. I help busy women elevate their style by rediscovering the joy of dressing to look and feel luxe.

So last week, I did a lot of shopping trips with clients where we went out to the malls to get some new pieces and wardrobe staples. And I really noticed how happy they were to be able to actually try the clothes on, to be in the stores and shop instead ordering everything online. And it really hit me, I was like wow, we really did miss that shopping experience back in 2020. And some of these were clients that normally hate shopping but after not being able to go out, get dressed and the only clothes shopping they could do was online, they seemed like actually enjoyed themselves shopping. I even got bit by the bug and over the weekend, I went out with some girlfriends and went shopping. You’d think as a stylist that I shop all the time for myself but I rarely shop. And it was a really fun experience to get dressed, go out with some girlfriends and do something for yourself. The pandemic showed us that life is so short and we never know what’s going to happen and I’ve applied the lesson when it comes to my fashion and it’s been exciting to see that other women have as well. I see women that get dressed to the nines to go grocery shopping, they are extra from head to toe and I am living for it and I also see women who are dressing for comfort and casual but it’s still elevated and I live for that too. Because in either case, it’s women getting dressed with intention, caring about how they present themselves and showing up for themselves.

I think being in the house and not having a reason to get dressed each day was hard on us. And now it’s like, oh when I go out, I’m doing it, I’m dressing for me and I’m going to present myself well. When we were out shopping, I even noticed that the sales associates were dressed to the nines, and I was loving every minute of it. I just feel like I see more and more women getting dressed up and just showing out. Even some of my clients this past year have told me that they reached out because they had a realization after the pandemic that they want to elevate their style and dress with more intention.

I feel like the years before the pandemic, the dress standards were really low but now it seems like more women are focusing on themselves and wanting to dress in a way that makes them feel good. 2020 was a dark year and this year has given us a reason to add more joy into our lives and having more fun with your style is a great way to bring more joy into your day to day life.

It’s been really interesting as a stylist and a just a girl who loves fashion to see how women’s views and their relationships have changed with fashion. I’m so inspired by my clients, the stylish sales asscoites in the stores or even strangers on the street. Seeing women take pride in themselves and want to dress for themselves and be extra with their fashion, gives me so much joy. So let me know has your relationship with fashion and has getting dressed changed for you since the pandemic. I’m just inspired by what I’m seeing right now and I needed to share this with yall.
