Why I Do What I Do
So today, I wanted to do a different video than my usual ones where I give style tips or talk about fashion. I wanted to talk about why I do what I do as a personal stylist. The last networking meeting I went to, this marketing expert had the spotlight and she had all of us break down our whys. We dived into really figuring out our purpose, our passion and how we pursue it. So shoutout to michelle mercurio, that mini workshop was so inspiring that I wanted to share with you guys my whys.
So growing up biracial, I can remember as early as seven years old, feeling like I never fit in with my friends or really just kids my age. I was never black enough when I was around black kids and I was never white enough when I was around white kids. And that definitely effected my confidence and how I viewed who I am. I never could fit in this box that everyone would try to put me in and felt confused about my identity for a long time. But I can remember around this same time in my life watching that’s so raven or the cheetah girls or the lizzie mcguire show and being so in awe of the clothes. I would draw the clothes or I would try to replicate their outfits using what I had in my closet. Fashion was something that brought a lot of joy to me in day to day life and by age 12 I remember I started using it as a way to express myself. Fashion became my outlet to create my own box and be myself. I felt like you know what I can’t fit into societys box, I’m making my own box. I would spend hours in my room playing dress up and experimenting with different pieces and creating fun outfits. I found that I could express who I was through fashion and didn’t have to fit into anyone’s conformities. Dressing how I wanted gave me the confidence to embrace my individuality and uniqueness.
As I got older, I discovered how transformative a great outfit could be for your confidence. If I was having a bad week, I’d plan out my look for the next morning, choosing an outfit that would emulate how I wanted to feel. And without fail, that outfit made me feel more dynamic and self-assured once I got to school or to work. It gave me a quiet confidence and created a domino effect: I stood taller, I spoke louder and allowed myself to be seen. Those experiences made me a firm believer in dressing with intent and using fashion as my way to express how I wanted to feel.
So at the root of it, I do what I do because it brings me true joy. Fashion has always been fun for me. Being able to play with clothes and play around with the different shapes it creates is so fascinating to me. I love reading fashion journalism and reading articles describing fashion on the runways or going to stores and seeing how the mannequins are styled and touching the clothes to feel how the fabrics and how they lay and wear. I love shopping and trying on clothes, the actual act of looking on the racks, seeing what cool pieces I can find and trying them on is such a fun experience. Even little things like layering bracelets just to see the shimmer on my wrist, or playing with color in my outfits or hearing the sound of heels clack when you walk or how seeing fashionable women on the street rock their outfits and see how they interpret fashion or how they express who they are through their clothes. It gives me so much life and just brings me so much joy and gets me excited.
And that’s why I do what I do as a stylist because fashion is purely fun for me and I want to help other women experience that joy and confidence a fabulous outfit can bring.
Personal styling was the perfect fit for me because I get to use my creativity and joy that fashion brings me to show women how to feel more confident in their style and experience that same feeling fashion has always brought me.
So it sounds like such a simple answer but that is my truth. It's fun for me and brings me so much joy!
