What is a Personal Stylist?
Happy Monday! During this LIVE want to briefly discuss what exactly is a personal stylist. There’s so many careers and terminology used in the fashion industry and so I wanted to make this quick video to get super clear about what is a personal stylist and what it is that I do. My job is the kind of job that most people hear and think “huh, what is that?” so I’m going to break it down. But before we dive in, wanted to give you a quick introduction, I’m Emmaline Chappell and I’m a certified personal stylist. I have my own company called emmaline’s personal styling. I help busy women elevate their style by discovering a new way of dressing to look luxe for less.
Today, I want to explain what a personal stylist is and what they do. Let’s start with the basics. This is my definition of a personal stylist in my own words: a personal stylist qualified individual who helps a client to look their best through clothing and advises them on all things style. I like to compare it to a hair stylist. Women go to the professional to have their hair done and to feel pretty. What I do is similar only I’m working with their clothes.
So that leads to the common question of what does a personal stylist do. As a stylist, I do a number of services related to their image and style: I help women discover what colors look best on them, teach them how to dress for their body type, help them develop their own sense of style, I clean out their closet and ultimately, I help them feel confident in their clothes. In summary, a personal stylist helps women to look and feel their best in their clothes. Let’s talk really quick about misconceptions as a personal stylist. A personal stylist is not a fashion stylist or a wardrobe stylist. A fashion stylist works w/ a creative team that usually involves a photographer, makeup artist, hair stylist, a model and a creative director and together they work on photoshoot sets for fashion editorials and publications. It's the fashion stylists job to supply the clothing for the shoot and tell a visual story through the way the clothes are styled. And a wardrobe stylist works on set as well, usually for tv and commercials where they curate and supply the clothing for the characters and commercial models. Those two styling occupations are very different from personal styling. Personal styling is working with an everyday client, 1:1 to create an image through clothing that helps them look and feel their best.
The biggest misconception is that personal styling is only for the rich and famous. When most women hear personal styling they think super wealthy clients, only in places like LA or NY. But no! This is totally false. Personal styling is not exclusive to a certain demographic. It’s actually very accessible to everyday women. Great way to break it down is going back to that hair stylist comparison. Most women go to the hair salon every month, it’s usually an all day affair: they get it colored, cut, a blow out and may get eye brows waxed, the total costing anywhere from 400-600 every month. With a personal stylist, you make the investment up front via a styling package and in that initial package, they get all the intel they need from you; your body type, your best colors, your personal style, your closet edit. Because they took the time to get all of that intel in the initial package, they now know you, your style and your preferences and so continuing working together involves quicker, personalized styling services like styling you for a special event, shopping for several new pieces to update your wardrobe or vacation packing and outfit planning. With a hair stylist, you’re making that same big investment every time, each month. With a personal stylist, you make the big investment once and you can continue working together throughout the year to keep your style updated and save you time and money on your wardrobe. So when you know the system of how a personal stylist works you can see that yes, personal stylists are affordable and accessible to every day women.
So I hoped that helped to clear up any confusion on what a personal stylist, what they do and the different misconceptions.
