Print Mixing for Beginners!
Happy Monday! During this LIVE want to briefly discuss how to mix prints! Spring is right around the corner and I always associate spring with prints and I feel like it’s a great time to start mixing and clashing patterns in your outfits. But I know for many women the thought of mixing prints can be intimidating. They’re not sure which patterns go with what and how to pull it off confidently. So I’m going to give you a few of my tips. I have a whole workshop on this topic but today, I’ll give you some essentials to help you get started.
Before we dive in, I’ll give you a quick introduction, I’m Emmaline Chappell and I’m a certified personal stylist. I have my own company called emmaline’s personal styling. I help busy women elevate their style by discovering a new way of dressing to look luxe for less.
Today, I want to explain how to pull off mixing prints in your everyday looks. Tip one is balance: the key to successfully combining prints in your outfit is to make sure there is a balance. So when you’re just beginning to mix prints in your outfits, always start with just two prints and make sure one is a bigger scale print and the other is a smaller scale. This way it creates a balanced visual by having two separate sizes prints instead of two oversized prints in one outfit which could look too busy.
Tip two is pay close attention to color: when you’re mixing prints, always check to see if the two prints either share a base color or a similar color in their design of prints. So maybe you have a pair of plaid trousers with a base color of navy (the plaid is multi colored and the color that print is laying on is navy) and then you have an asymmetric pinstripe blouse (the stripes are one color and the stripes are also laying on navy) these two pieces would blend harmoniously because they share that same base color. This tip on color is essential to making sure your print mixing looks cohesive.
Tip three is for the ladies who want to dip their top in print mixing, they don’t want to go full throttle just yet: you don’t have to mix patterns by only using your garments, you can do it through accessories. Printed scarves, earrings, belts, shoes and handbags. You could do a leopard printed pump that has pink accents in the pattern and pair it with a polka dot clutch that has that same pink piping. This is great step for women who want to take baby steps to incorporating print mixing into their wardrobe.
For my last tip I wanted to give you a few winning combos that always work so make sure you save these in your style piggy bank to remember: gingham and hounds tooth, floral and stripes, geometric lines and polka dots. The key is make sure it’s two prints in your outfits, let the two prints differ in sizing and make sure they have one color in common. Use these tips the next time you’re getting dressed and shopping for printed pieces and you’ll be on your way to mastering the art of print mixing.
