Personal Stylist Misconceptions

Hey fashionistas, this is your personal stylist Emmaline Chappell, if this is your first time watching one of my videos, welcome, I’m a certified personal stylist, I have my own business here in richmnond va and I help busy business women elevate their style by rediscovering the joy of dressing to look and feel fabulously on-brand. And I wanted to quickly talk about the top two misconceptions women have about personal stylists.

The first is that they’re worried I’m going to be stuck up and mean.

They’re afraid I’m gonna come in and say your style is ugly, we need to get rid of everything and judge them but that’s never been my approach, I always wanna meet you where you are and just gently push you a little out of your style comfort zone. But it’s always about working as a team and being respectful.

And the second misconception I hear is ‘how hard can your job actually be, you’re just throwing clothes on someone’

This is one makes me mad, not gonna lie. There’s so much more to my job than just putting a client in a random outfit.

In order to help them feel confident from the inside out, as a stylist you have to get to know the client, build a relationship, learn about their lifestyle, their style preferences, their goals, how they feel about their body, how they wanna show up in the world. There’s a lot psychology behind the work a stylist does.

You have to listen, engage, teach, stay educated and up to date on brands and trends and be their expert on all things fashion.

I don’t think stylists get the respect they deserve sometimes. It’s more than just putting someone in fashionable clothes.

We’re their stylist, their confidence coach and their friend all wrapped into one to show them how to use style to celebrate their individuality.

I totally get these misconceptions though. Fashion can feel intimidating to a lot of women so the idea of this style consultant coming into your home, into your closet and looking at your clothes can sound scary when you think about it in terms like that.

I just want women to think of me as their style cheerleader. I’m here to open your eyes to a new way of dressing, not change you but encourage you to see how fabulous you are and show you all the amazing outfit possibilities you actually have no matter your shape, size or age.
