The Importance of Personal Style
So today, I wanted to talk about this idea of personal style. Every woman has a personal style. It’s what you project to the world by the way you’re dressing to show who you are. So you know those times where you look in your closet and feel like it’s full of a hodgepodge of pieces or you’re out shopping and you see endless options and have no idea what you gravitate towards. Those are signs that you haven’t gotten clear on your personal style. I’m going to give some tips on how to start defining your personal style in another video but today I wanted to share my thoughts on why having a fully recognized personal style is super important.
Before we dive in, I’m Emmaline Chappell and I’m a certified personal stylist. I have my own business here in Richmond. I help busy women elevate their style by rediscovering the joy of dressing to look and feel luxe.
You’re probably thinking okay yeah I get it but what exactly is your personal style? What makes up a personal style. It’s basically a combination of your style preferences, your experiences in your life, your interests, cultures and hobbies that speak to you. Like for me, a big part of my personal style is to incorporate color in my outfits. It reminds me of the colorful characters I use to draw when I was little, wearing color makes me feel happy and confident versus when I wear neutrals, I feel more like myself. And whenever I incorporate color into my outfits, it taps into my creative side and I get more bold in how I style my outfits. So your personal style is made of all the different influences you have in your life. It’s showcasing the heart of who you are. And it’s always evolving and changing because as people, we’re never stagnant. We’re always experiencing new people, places and situations.
So I’m sure you’ve seen those little quizzes on pinterest or in magazines where you answer a couple questions and at the end you get told what your personal style is. It’s usually something basic like oh you’re edgy or boho chic. These types of quizzes really irk me as a stylist for a couple reasons. One, I don’t think you can sum up something that’s so intricate and personal in one generic word. And two there’s no way some computerized software can define your personal style from just a couple questions. It takes time, effort and thought to define your personal style. And when it comes to defining your style I feel like it should be something unique and signature to you. Like rugged wildflower not just boho. That’s basic and you’re not basic.
So once you know your personal style, it makes shopping so much easier. You start using your personal style as a filter to determine if the pieces you’re looking at in stores or online suit your style before you make the commitment of buying. So this cuts down on collecting more pieces that’ll just go unworn hanging in your closet. And you’ll be able to create a more cohesive wardrobe. Everything will just go together seamlessly because every piece suits your personal style. When you don’t know your style, there’s a disconnect. You’ve got preppy pieces, neon pieces, classic pieces and 70s inspired pieces, you’re not going to know how you want to dress. When you get clear on your style, you can buy accordingly and your wardrobe will finally just work for you.
Knowing your personal style is the secret to feeling more confident in your clothes. You’ll finally feel like you’re the best version of yourself. That you’re wearing the clothes, they aren’t wearing you. your personal style is signature to you and enhances who you already are. And there’s so much power in being in charge of what your style says about you.
