Ladies, let's talk about brands!

In this video, I wanted to talk about brands. As a personal stylist, I get asked all the time, what’s your favorite brands, what brands do you recommend to all women? I wish I could give a brief list sharing the top brands every woman should shop from but unfortunately, there’s no set list that could cover everyone. Shopping for someone is very personalized. There are so many other elements to think about than solely the clothing brands: you have to think about their taste, their preferences, their budget, their personal style and their body type. Although I can’t give you a list, I wanted to share some tips on how to narrow down what brands may suit you.

Before we dive in, I’m Emmaline Chappell and I’m a certified personal stylist. I have my own business here in Richmond. I help busy women elevate their style by rediscovering the joy of dressing to look luxe for less.

So for me, when I’m shopping for my clients and even for myself, the two biggest factors that I look at are: body type and budget. Even if you don’t know you body type, you can break it down by these main categories: average height, mid size, petite, tall or curvy.

For petites: great affordable brands like nasty gal and express are good choices and reformation and draper james are higher end petite brands that you could choose from as well.

If you’re mid size meaning you’re in the middle of what the industry says is plus size and average size: I would try American eagle and the gap or old navy, they’re all budget friendly and Modcloth or simply be are higher priced brands that work well for mid size women.

For curvier body types: asos curve and river island are very affordable and then you can try Eloquii and loudbodies for a higher budget.

If you’re tall like me: levis and topshop can be budget friendly or you could do more luxury brands madewell and boden.

And for all the average height women, you have a ton of choices, anywhere from target, to boohoo to nordstorm and bloomingdales.

Brands are definitely important. I like to know what’s out there and keep myself updated on the different brands to see which ones I feel comfortable referring my clients to or which ones I want shop from. But I wouldn’t say I’m brand specific as a stylist. It’s one factor that I take into account. But it’s also about the quality each person is wanting to go for, the type of fit they want, how the garment feels on your body when worn, the aesthetic or personal style they have, is it fast fashion or is it a sustainable brand. It’s a really personalized method.

Every woman is different and wants different things when it comes to their style. And so as a stylist, my approach is to always look at many other factors when I’m shopping for women. My motto is: brands are definitely important but it also comes down to how the piece fits, how it feels when worn and how it makes you feel.
